Environment and Sustainability
Blue Star is passionate and active in our pursuit of best practice environmental management. Our mission is to become the printing industry‘s leader in ‘Carbon Productivity’. Specifically, this refers to achieving year-on-year improvements in our carbon efficiency. Therefore, we are taking steps to baseline our current activity and to establish meaningful, achievable and realistic improvements in the carbon efficiency of everything we produce.
Our journey towards the market leadership in carbon productivity is driven by four areas of activity:
Reduced environmental impact
- Comprehensive recycling program for paper, inks, aluminium plates and solvents
- Investment in new press and pre-press technology to improve energy and water usage (e.g. Perfecting press fleet has reduced energy consumption by about 35%)
- Real estate consolidation
- Productivity improvements to reduce waste and improve cycle times
- Right-sized print runs, which help our customers reduce stock obsolescence
Sustainable supply chains
- Renewable paper sources: all production facilities have Forest Stewardship Council, Chain of Custody Certification, which recognises our ability to source paper products from well-managed forests. Webstar Australia also has PEFC accreditation.
- 95% of inks are organically based and ink wastage is virtually zero due to the adoption of the latest ink cartridge technology
- Computer to plate technology in all production facilities has eliminated all chemicals and by-products associated with film-based pre-press
- Installation of rainwater tanks
Green choices for customers
- 100% recycled paper and a variety of other environmentally friendly stocks (e.g. carbon neutral paper))
- 100% biodegradable plastic wraps
- Blue Star’s geographic footprint provides options for local production, thereby reducing transport
- Print management teams work collaboratively to help customers reduce usage of consumables (and costs)
